REAL LIFE & LIARS by Kristina Riggle
From the back of the book:
For Mirabelle Zielinski's children, happiness always seems to be just out of reach. Her polished oldest daughter, Katya, clings to a stale marriage with a workaholic husband and three spoiled children. Her son, Ivan, so creative, is a down-in-the-dumps songwriter with the worst taste in women. And the "baby," impulsive Irina, who lives life on a whim, is now reluctantly pregnant and hitched to a man who is twice her age. On the weekend of their parents' anniversary party, lies will be revealed, hearts will be broken...but love will also be found. And the biggest shock may come from Mirabelle herself, because she has a secret that will change everything.
This is the second book by Ms. Riggle that I've read. I loved the first one, THINGS WE DIDN'T SAY, so I immediately went out and bought the rest of her current books. This particular book was the first one she wrote and published.
Again, chapters were written from the viewpoint of the different characters. Mira is an old hippie, weighed down by a secret she is keeping from her children. She is determined to do things her own way. Katya is materialistic, very concerned about appearances, and has absolutely no control over her children. She needs a good dose of reality. Ivan is a sweetheart who is being used by the women he dates, and who can't see what's right in front of his eyes. And Irina - she needs a good smack upside the head. Wild, newly pregnant and married, and completely unhappy about the whole situation.
Ivan asks Katya how she got "such a perfect life." Her response: "There is no perfect. Only real life and liars." Such a true statement. Things are not really what they seem to be or how others perceive them. Secrets are revealed at their parents' anniversary party and some life-changing decisions are made.
I really enjoyed this book. Interesting characters and a great story line. I'm looking forward to reading more from Ms. Riggle.
